Disc 4:
Practicing
The Exercises:
You don’t have to go out to the bar. In fact, I’ll
tell you, these things are great to practice throughout
the day.
Do things slowly, and clearly. Like a politician, or a
sales person, or an executive. They know that they have
your attention. There’s no question in their mind
that they control the conversation. And they talk slowly,
and they talk clearly. And they talk with power. You can
do that.
Talk to everyone, you know. When you go to the grocery
store, whenever you see someone with a name tag, call them
by their name. “Thanks Sheryl, Thanks Jim.”
Nobody does that. It makes you feel powerful. When you’re
checking out of the grocery store, and you’re like
“hey Sheryl, how’s it going?” And when
she realizes you don’t know her and you’re just
being friendly. That makes you feel powerful! All these
things…
Making eye contact with people. You guys know that. Powerful
people… that’s how sociologists figure out who
has more power – who makes the most eye contact. Really
important. And I’ll tell you if you’re only
practicing eye contact out in the bars you’re not
going to get it.
So these things are all things you need to be doing in
your daily life. So, I’m just pointing out that these
exercises you need to do all the time.
The best coach that you have is your own body, and how
you’re body feels. That’s the best coach. The
problem is that when you’re actually in set, you can’t
listen to that because there’s so much going on. But
during the day…
Here’s my point… walking into the office is
a really good example. If every time you walk into the office
you walk in like you own it. You really just want to make
sure everything’s ok, you want to check it out. You
want to be slow, you want to take your time.
If you get in the habit of always doing these things, that
will change you. And the way you know you’re doing
it, is you’ll feel a little bit of that intensity.
You guys know what I’m talking about?
This idea of “I’m really powerful, and I’m
not used to being this powerful” Makes me feel a little
bit uncomfortable. And this idea that “wow, I really
just messed up. I really just want to hide right now.”
That makes me feel uncomfortable too. But, it’s a
completely different type of feeling.
Does that make sense? It’s like if you were walking
up to get the Emmy. Or you just broke the China. They’re
both uncomfortable, but they’re completely different
feelings. And, the reason I’m making such a big deal
out of this is because you guys need to understand the difference
between those feelings. Think about this. You guys can think
about this, because this is my own coach.
The exercises that change you the most, are the things
that you’re always thinking about and you’re
always working on. We spend more time on body language,
vibing, the way you’re physical with your communication,
the way you touch strangers or friends in a friendly way…
all those things are so much more important. And that’s
it. That’s the most important stuff. And that’s
stuff you can work on all the time, non-stop.
I like to think about exercises instead of tricks or techniques.
Tricks can only work for so long. You actually have to become
a different person. And, that sounds hard, but it’s
actually pretty easy. Because you can do these things in
your daily life...
