The Self-Help Paradox

I went to a business conference last weekend and was
reminded of an important lesson that relates to women.

I had enjoyed the conference and had learned a TON. I had
learned from the presentations, learned from conversations
with friends I knew there, and had learned from numerous
one-on-one conversations with some absolute rock-stars in
business and marketing.

Guys who had created and sold businesses valued anywhere
from the millions to hundreds of millions of dollars.

(By the way, the CEO of a billion dollar company that I
talked to turned out to be a fan of my material so if you're
reading this you are in pretty good company.)

Anyway, through these connections I ended up getting a free
ride to the airport on my way home from the event.

During the ride I asked my driver if he enjoyed the
conference.

To say I was happy with the event would be an
understatement, so you can imagine my surprise when my
driver complained about the seminar.

He claimed that there wasn't anything really new presented,
and even bragged that everything that had been discussed was
stuff that he had already learned before.

I pointed out to him that people as a whole don't really
change much from year to year. It follows that if you want
to market to them effectively then your techniques would
not change from year to year either.

That didn't seem to help him much.

At this point I should mention that my driver was NOT
in the category of guys who had sold businesses for millions
of dollars. From what I could gather, he was successful in
just barely making a living, but not much else.

As a teacher and an educator, I could immediately tell that
this man was a self-help paradox.

He had paid thousands to attend.

He had taken time away from his business and had flown in
from out of town.

And yet he wasn't there to learn.

Not really.

He was NOT there to achieve mastery in business and
marketing, which are VERY deep and complicated skill sets.

He was there to learn something NEW.

Those are VERY different goals, and will get you very
different results.

The truth is, in business and in women, you can chase down
that latest FAD promoted by the industry, OR you can focus
on the FUNDAMENTALS.

The FAD chasers get a surface-level understanding of one
technique after another.

When the don't get money (or women) right away they quickly
jump on the NEW fad in hopes that this so-called NEW thing
is the missing secret.

Those who get results, on the other hand, know that the key
is in MASTERING the fundamentals.

That's why the successful business people were happy to stay
and learn - THEY were always able to find something new to
learn about the fundamentals of their business.

And that's why our workshop focus on fundamentals, and yet
NEVER get old - even to our executive coaches who have been
teaching them for years.

Fundamentals never get old, and fads almost never work.

Now go work on the FUNDAMENTALS,

Your friend,

Lance Mason
