The 5-Minute Attraction Story Generator
I've been digging through some of Lance's and William's info on stories, and I think this might help. Your story should have a quick hook question with an unusual (meaning not where are you ladies headed tonight) topic, that will either engage opinions or get their attention. Helpful if you are probing for yes/no or one word answers. You want them to jump in right away with emotional reactions, not logic. After the hook, let them reply. Banter back with energy and enthusiasm to whatever they say. You want them engaged now. Jump into opener story. This story should be as short as you can possibly make it (not a 5-minute long drama about saving puppies from near-death, like some stories I tell), fast, emotional, and end with a pause and clear punch line. Then go right to banter with no segue at all. Someone else posted a great line on this board about that. Segues are for amatuers. Banana. I'm seriously considering creating a MadLibs opener generator for this stuff just to make the first day go easier. Like:
- Hey guys! you ever [verb] a [noun]?
- Awesome! High Five for that sassy answer. C'mon, a real high five.
- Check this. [I, my friend, my ex-girlfriend] was [fairly normal activity, preferably a little sexy] when [unusual thing happened].
- [I, my friend, ex] was like OMG [emotional reaction]! It was like [analogy to something funny]… [pause].
- That's the last time I [restate activity in funnier way]!
For example… i will now write a fairly mediocre opener in 5 minutes or less.
Guys. Guys! You ever ride a dolphin? Awesome! High Five for that. Check this. My ex-girlfriend was at sea world and they have this thing where you can ride the dolphins. So she's all stoked tries it. She jumps in, and the dolphin like whooshes her thru the water by pushing her ass with its nose. But when they're done, the dolphins all rubbing against her. And it's got a great big hard on. The trainer had to jump in and like chase it away with a whiffle bat. That's the last time she falls for that trick.
There. Weird, funny, quick. Tell it with energy, and tell it a lot, and you'll be ready to think on your feet and jump into the really fun part, the banter, when you arrive. Sean
