Sean Newman – Art of Rapport
Magnus, Bristol Lair

Sean Newman invited me along to his London workshop this weekend. I’m careful to only recommend products on bristollair.com that I really believe in, and the last PickUp 101 event I attended was two years ago in San Francisco, so I was interested to see what they were up to.

PickUp 101 have grown a lot since then, and are producing products at such a rapid rate it looks like they are aiming to position themselves as the next Double Your Dating. The biggest hump pick-up coaching companies have to get past is convincing their customers to take seminars with someone other than the founding instructor. Sure enough, at the start of the Art of Rapport weekend, someone was heard asking where Lance Mason was, and seemed surprised to hear that he wasn’t leading the weekend.

So the big question is, how cool is Sean Newman? Really fucking cool, is the answer.

Sean has the presence and intensity it takes to be a great pickup instructor, it’s clear that women adore him and guys respect him. He really believes in the material he teaches and in his students. What really struck me was the honesty and openness he brought to the workshop, he really gave all he could of himself at every moment.

The other instructors brought a variety of skills to the table and were all well above par for approach coach/workshop helpers, which is fortunate as these are often notoriously bad depending on who is helping on a particular workshop. Nothing sucks more when you’ve paid major $$$ for a workshop than to be lumbered with a nervous ex-student while the lead instructor is working with other students. I didn’t get that feeling at all this time round, and I don’t think anyone else did. Indeed, in group sessions questions were directed at the other instructors nearly as much as they were at Sean. Neils in particular is destined to be a great lead instructor sooner or later.

Sean broke down the structure of building rapport nicely. He encouraged dropping down into rapport very quickly, rather than running unneeded attraction game. This is something I’ll have to experiment with over the next few weeks.

There were a lot of exercises where we broke into smaller groups, and I could see the other students really starting to get it during these. The instructors were patient and gave very good feedback. I actually think that the exercises are more useful than the fieldwork in terms of learning.

I missed the Sunday morning, when the Supergirls were there for practice on a real girl, as I was seeing my own Supergirl the night before. I asked one of the other students how it went, and he said he got really good honest feedback from that part of the workshop.

Art of Rapport focuses much more on the emotional side of really connecting with a girl, something that is definitely filling a gap in the market. All the fieldwork was day game, and the seminar went on until late each night, which I think was an effective format.

Sean and PickUp 101 get the thumbs up from me.
