Today’s field report comes to us from a Mason Man who has clearly
been working the body language on overtime – especially at the
office.
I talk a little bit about the ‘elevator pickup’ in my Fearless

Re: Office Romance Week: My first elevator pickup
Hi Lance,
While we’re on the topic of office romances… I did my first
elevator pickup the other day. As an IT consultant in London I
visit many different offices. The other day, I walked into the
bank I was working in, Starbuck’s in-hand, and there was already an
attractive Asian woman patiently holding the security door open for
me (even though I was clear on the other side of the lobby, like
100 feet away..) She then opened the next door for me, and then we
got in the elevator along with several other people.
She was standing next to me, but she seemed kinda tense (or
nervous?) As it was Monday, I just started talking to her with a
totally chill vibe as if we were old friends or whatever…. So
nice weekend ? blah blah blah…)
She visibly relaxed a bit. We got to the third floor which was her
stop, she wished me a nice day and exited, but then turned around,
came BACK INTO the lift and looked at which buttons were
highlighted… and since only 4 was still lit up, she said "Oh,
you work at (censored) Bank ? Maybe I’ll see you around ?"
I said: "Sure, lets have coffee sometime." (very non-committal.)
Still in the elevator door, she asks: "When ?" I said "Tomorrow
morning."
She hands me her business card and says "Text me." The last thing
I see before the elevator door shuts is her beaming smile as she
turns back to her floor (yeah – she is going to have a nice day!)
Meanwhile, there’s this other guy in the lift that says to me:
"Known her for a while ?" I said "about 3 minutes actually."
He says (incredulous) "uh…how’d you do that ? I’ve been trying
to get her to go out with me for weeks." (lol!) – I pointed him to
your website.
So I met her the next day for coffee, and well… now I have three
girlfriends and I have to decide which one I’m going to have to let
go…

Anyway, one thing I have learned from your programs is to break
these interactions down and analyze them in retrospect. The key
factor in this particular pickup was good body language, because
there certainly wasn’t much time for banter, or even more than 2
exchanges of words between us… (she must have seen me walking
down the street BEFORE I even entered the bank, ‘cos she was
ALREADY standing in the lobby WAITING for me as she held the first
door… I just didn’t realize all this was going on until I broke
it down afterward!)

Awesome work Jack! You know you have the mojo going on overtime
when she asked YOU out …. In an elevator … in front of a stranger.
Not bad at all.
Just shows you how powerful body language can really be … even in
the workplace.
I also loved how you broke it down.
You’re explication of how she must have seen YOU first, and then
waited to talk to you may seem far fetched to some guys. But the
guys who have a lot of female friends know that girls WILL do this
sort of thing when they see a true man of confidence.
In any case, nothing would have happened if you hadn’t had the
balls to start a conversation with her in the elevator at work -
something most guys will never do in their lifetime.
As much as I love your work, Jack, I DO want to point out that
setting up a date in a public space something most guys will NOT
want to do in there workplace.
It works great for Jack since he visits many offices and isn’t
quite as invested in any one environment.
